Tribute to Becky Harris. I was first diagnosed with lymphedema due to excessive swelling in my feet, ankles, and legs, by Dr. Eddie Fernandez, MD at “The Center for Vein Restoration.” I was referred to a smaller unit which addressed lymphedema problems which included a “lymphedema specialist” and a sales rep from a company which manufactured lymphedema “pumps” used for lymphatic drainage. I did see the specialist who fitted me with ankle/foot wraps to relieve the swelling but unfortunately the ankle wraps caused me even more pain. The other option of the “pump” was not the answer either because the cost of buying one was exorbitant ($1,500). The mechanical massage for lymphatic drainage from this device only compresses inward , whereas manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) provided by a nursing technician/MLD Massage Practitioner moves the fluid through the lymph vessels up to the trunk of the body. So, neither the pump or the wraps were viable options for me. Eventually Ms. Victoria Goldsten, who is a Licensed Massage Therapist and a Licensed Practical Nurse with the Washington Institute of Natural Medicine, who has been effectively treating lymphedema clients for over 30 years, contacted me and invited me to a lecture given by her and a demonstration of the manual lymphatic drainage on me, utilizing nursing and massage therapists (in training). It was there I met who was to become my current Nursing Technician/MLD Therapist, Ms. Becky Harris. Ms. Harris, with her sunny disposition, intelligence, curiosity, resourcefulness, and skill has brought about in my condition a “ little miracles!” The swelling has gone way down (my feet can now fit comfortably into a size 12” shoe down from a 13” shoe size) and no longer have to have weekly treatments but a treatment only every other week. All things being right I should be down to only one treatment a month very soon and I give all the credit to Ms. Harris, who deserves it!
